Parenthood Brings Jodie Foster Out

Jodie FosterJodie Foster has long been the celebrity most rumored to be a lesbian but least willing to say so, at least to the world at large. After Ellen reports today, though, that after Foster gave a large sum of money to the Saban Center for Health and Wellness, her sons got to have plaques on the walls with their handprints embedded in them. The names on the plaques? Kit Bernard Foster and Charles Bernard Foster—Bernard being the last name of Cydney Bernard, the woman thought to be Foster’s partner.

As any lesbian or gay parent who’s ever been to a supermarket with their kids knows, it’s hard to stay in the closet when you have children. Maybe the supermarket clerks in LA are ahead of the rest of us on this one, or maybe Foster doesn’t do her own grocery shopping. It’s good to see she isn’t trying to make her kids hide their identities, though, even if she does keep most of her private life in lockdown.

An official welcome to being a lesbian mom, then, Jodie. I’ll add you to the Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America list next time I issue an update.

  1. Whilst I’d certainly be supportive if Jodie came out, it’s refreshing to see someone who isn’t abusing her position of fame for political gain.

  2. When I read your headline, the toast in my mouth nearly spilled out from my dropped jaw. I was a Jodiephile back long ago, and of course, as all tomboys, felt an ineffable connection to her in her early movies (“Wow! She seems just like me!”).

Parenthood and the closet: not so very compatible for us folks. Thanks for breaking the news. Now I can find my toast and go back to eating breakfast.

  3. Great news about Jodie! I don’t really understand Alicia’s comment. It seems to me that Jodie has more to gain for herself by being closet and that by “abusing” her fame, she is more likely to make political gains that might well benefit the entire community.

  4. If you think about it, we don’t know much anything about Jodie that is of substance. How does she feel about the Iraq War? Hillary Clinton? Darfur? Poverty? Or even What’s her favorite color? I think she just likes to define the line between a private and public persona because she’s never had the chance to be purely a private citizen since she’s been famous pretty much since birth. And yeah it would be nice if she admitted to the public, but really she doesn’t own anyone except her family and friends anything.
