Here’s the growing list of posts submitted to Blogging for LGBT Elders Day. Add yours and help raise awareness of the challenges our elders face!
I’m holding this event in conjunction with Logo TV’s television premiere of Gen Silent tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The film profiles six LGBT elders as they navigate the challenges so many others also face—challenges that have in the past received far too little attention. We hope you’ll add your voice to those speaking up for and about LGBT elders. Mark your posts with #GenSilent. Some suggested topics:
- How can we help LGBT seniors?
- Are LGBT elders invisible in today’s movement?
- How can we move the LGBT Elder Americans Act forward? It was introduced to Congress in July 2015 by Sen. Michael Bennet (D- CO).
SAGE has great resources to pull from. Please also include the trailer to the film and note that it airs on Monday, Nov. 9 at 9pm ET/PT on Logo.

Although I write/post on my FB page all the time- I don’t have a ‘blog’. And I’m posting this before your program even airs. At 62 my grocery store gives me a senior discount- but the local transit system does not- yet. And 62 is young- sort-of. But since I lost hundreds and hundreds of friends in the 1980s/90s- the fact that I made it to 62 AT ALL makes me older than god. But do youngsters wanna have anything to do with me? Not necessarily- but I can’t tolerate their ignorance- either. Their ‘accepting reality’ exists because I came out to myself at 13 (1966) and out to everyone else after leaving high school.
But as a working artist- I can’t afford to fade into the woodwork- as I ‘age’. My age and the amount of time I’ve invested in artistic/financial success requires me to be out there and even somewhat in your face. And metaphysically I had to become ageless/timeless just to keep on going after climbing out of that hell-on-earth depression I was in 3 decades ago. And oddly- as an artist I’ve spent the majority of my time alone- so aloneness doesn’t bother me- and I don’t plan on living beyond my own ability to take care of myself- anyway- because there is no one who wants to take care of me. So- whatever.
And because many of my friends have shown back up after they left- I’ve lost all fear of dying. When it’s over- it’s over. Enjoy!
Thanks so much for sharing your perspective with us!
