My first post of 2006. I must have blinked while 2005 went by. Now my son is talking like he’s always known how, sleeping in a real bed, and otherwise acting like a boy rather than a baby. While January seems like a time for making predictions about the year, I don’t want to even speculate about what he’ll be capable of by next December. Hopefully I’ll be capable of keeping up with him, whatever he may do.
We’re having a bit of snow here in the northeast, which means I can’t go out to the cable-company store and pick up the set-top box we need to get Showtime, aka The Channel that Carries The L Word. We want to get it set up before the premiere this weekend, just in case something goes wrong. (Having an engineer for a partner is helpful, but not always a guarantee.) The L Word is one of two entertainment delights I’m looking forward to at the beginning of the year, the other being the Winter Olympics. Despite the various scandals that have plagued both the Games overall and specific athletes, I still love watching them. I think I see more TV during those two weeks than all the rest of the year.
As I’ve been writing this post, it’s spontaneously taken shape in a way that reflects my hopes for 2006, and my New Year’s resolutions, such as they are. First, that I may continue striving to be the best mother I can for my son, and second, that I may do so without ignoring other facets of myself or my other interests. When I was employed, we called this “work-life balance.” I think a more encompassing phrase, which applies to anyone, employed or not, is “life balance.” May we all find life balance in 2006.
