Children and Race

What can you learn about race from a seven-year-old? Rachel at Alas, a blog explores this question based on her own experience, and it’s worth a read. If you’re a multi-racial family, you may find immediate resonances. Even if you’re not, however, it will give you a lot to ponder in terms of how our culture teaches about both race and what it means to be a family. Her conversation with her partner’s son about whether black kids can have white moms has echoes in conversations about whether a child can have two moms or two dads. Goes to show why it’s so important that the various civil-rights movements work together to create a more inclusive understanding of family across all dimensions.
