Yesterday was the 11th annual Read Across America celebration, a program sponsored by the National Education Association to encourage children’s love of reading. The event is held every year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel).
We love us some Seuss here at the house of Mombian. At the risk of starting a debate fiercer than that of “Clinton vs. Obama”: What’s your favorite Seuss book?
I can’t say I have a clear favorite, but I’ll give a plug for Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!, a wonderful celebration of imagination. I think it sometimes gets short shrift next to his more well known works like The Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears A Who!, and Green Eggs and Ham.
My favorite was always the obscure Oh Say Can You Say? I can still quote whole pages from memory. Our kids, keeping with the tongue twister theme, ask for Fox in Socks over and over again.
Oh say can you say Din-o-saur? My son loves this book, we read it over and over.
I think “The Lorax” gets forgotten but it is great and really makes kids think about the planet.
The Sleep Book – when I read it to my daughter I am falling asleep by the end….she isn’t always, but what can you do, we love it anyway
