Illinois Makes 15 for Marriage Equality

illinois_flagCongratulations to Illinois, which today became the 15th state to pass marriage equality. State Rep. Kelly Cassidy, a lesbian mom of three, told her colleagues before the vote to think of future generations, reported the Windy City Times. “It is their opinion of your actions today that really matters,” she said.

I was touched, too, by this scene reported by the Washington Blade:

State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz read a letter she said was from a child adopted by a gay male couple, becoming teary-eyed when she came to a part where the child wrote that her previous foster parents had broken their promise to provide love, but not her gay adoptive parents.

Add this to the passage of the Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA) through a Senate committee on Monday, with almost certain passage through the full Senate (but probably not the House, alas), and it’s been a pretty good week. Onward!
