I’m a sometimes-disgruntled Windows user with an iPad and an Android phone . . . but I applaud Microsoft for including DOMA challenger Edie Windsor (as well as out lesbian super-swimmer Diana Nyad) in its video “Celebrating the Heroic Women of 2013.” Watch below.
The presence of Windsor and Nyad is somewhat tempered by that of former U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, whose Conservative government in 1988 enacted Section 28, which banned the “promotion of homosexuality” by local authorities such as schools. Section 28 was repealed in 2003, however, so perhaps the inclusion of Thatcher also emphasizes the progress we’ve made towards LGBT equality over the last decade.
The Microsoft ad aired December 31 on major networks across the country, including Fox News, which just makes me smile.
