The fifth episode of Sez Me, a gender-expansive and queer-positive Web video series for kids, drops next Wednesday, so take time now to catch up on any of the previous episodes you’ve missed.
Sez Me, the creation of Mor Erlich, stars drag queen Charmin Ultra (Jeff Marras), along with a variety of child co-stars and the animated news anchor Hello Yellow. The best part of the show, for me, is that Charmin never talks down to the kids. Her silliness and sense of fun buoy the show without ever sounding patronizing. As I said in my post when the series launched two years ago, it feels genuine, unlike some other kids’ shows that seem to try too hard. The real comments and questions from the kids balance Charmin’s campiness and it somehow all works, conveying ideas of acceptance without being preachy.
Episode 5, which premieres January 27, will guest star Cirque du Soleil headliner Michelle Matlock alongside kid anchor Stella and regulars Charmin Ultra and Hello Mellow “for an evolutionary educational experience.”
In the meantime, below is last year’s Episode 4, “Cats on Ice,” featuring a gender-neutral ice skater and cat drag, among other things. Lots of fun. If you’ve missed earlier episodes, or want to rewatch them, here’s the full list, plus two short newsflashes on the terms “queer” and “preferred gender pronouns.”
