UK supermarket giant Sainsbury’s features a two-mom couple, along with an interracial couple, in its upbeat Christmas ad for the year.
In “The Greatest Gift,” the main character, Dave, rushes around trying to get things ready for Christmas. When he decides that the best gift for his family is his time, he comes up with an ingenious solution to get more of it. Dave, who is White, has a Black wife and two kids who each look like one of their parents. He also has a two-mom family as neighbors, who show up briefly at about 2:48.
The bouncy song was written by Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords) and sung by the Late Late Show’s James Corden. The ad will air on television and social media. Sales of gingerbread Daves and stop-motion animation kits will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
Bravo for their inclusivity—but if they’re taking that path, why not make it a broad-based holiday advert and include the family celebrating Hanukkah down the street? Still, the ad’s joyous tone was just what I needed this week. Watch:
