In light of the Trump administration’s decision yesterday to rescind guidance that protected transgender students, I felt it was especially important to share a great new resource for kids (and their grown-ups) about gender identity.
Who Are You? The Kid’s Guide to Gender Identity, by teacher and author Brook Pessin-Whedbee, is a thoughtful book that “gives kids the language, and gives adults the language, to talk about gender and to learn about gender,” Pessin-Whedbee says in the video below. It’s not just for trans or gender non-conforming children, though. Pessin-Whedbee explains: “This is a book about all kids, and whoever reads it really gets to bring their own story to the book.”
You can listen to her read the whole book and talk about it with Sandra Collins, executive director and founder of the Bay Area Day Camp and the non-profit enGender, below. You may wish to consider getting a hard copy, though, since it comes with a fun and interactive removable gender wheel, which Pessin-Whedbee demonstrates in the video—a great little tool for conversations.
Additionally, you may want to watch the companion video geared towards adults, which further discusses how adults can structure conversations about gender for their kids. For that matter, check out the book’s website, which lists even more resources on gender, and Gender Spectrum’s entire YouTube channel with videos about gender identity, parenting non-binary kids, creating inclusive schools, and much more.
