“L Word: Generation Q” Trailer Already Raises Parenting Questions

The first trailer for The L Word: Generation Q is here—and it’s already giving me parenting feels. As with the original series, I’ll be taking a close look at any and all storylines related to parenting, so let’s start with the trailer.

The L Word: Generation Q

Several times in the trailer, we see a teen who is presumably Bette and Tina’s daughter Angie (Jordan Hull). From the looks of her school uniform (“Woodward Preparatory”), it seems Bette won what I only imagine was an ongoing fight with Tina about what type of school to put her in, and Angie has remained in private school. But wait: That’s not Tina in Bette’s office, moving in for an embrace. Ardent fans may recall that in the post-show “Interrogation Tapes” that Showtime put out, Bette expressed anger that Tina didn’t ask her to carry their second child. Was that what drove them apart? How are they handling child custody? Will Bette’s mayoral run put pressure on Angie, and how will Angie respond? Perhaps Bette could get some advice from Lena Adams Foster of Freeform’s The Fosters and Good Trouble—another biracial lesbian mom running for elected office. (Let’s not let cross-network competition interfere with my fanfic.)

So many questions. There’s not really much to go on here, though. Entertainment Weekly called Angie “a strong-willed teenager navigating high school friendships and first loves”; from the trailer, it seems she also enjoys her earbuds. Pretty typical teenage stuff. One can only assume, though, that with Bette Porter and Tina Kennard (if she still plays any role) as her moms, Angie’s life may be anything but typical. Here’s hoping, though, that her parents manage to give Angie the right balance of guidelines and independence to discover the person she wants to be and to grow into a reasonably well-adjusted adult. That’s the most any of us parents of teens can hope for (and I say this with some authority, as my own son is about Angie’s age).
