I’ve added nearly 200 new items to my Database of LGBTQ Family Books and More this year—so here’s a roundup of some of the roundups I’ve done, highlighting various identities, topics, and themes: Baking! Cats! Drag queens! Science! Bedtime stories! Board books! Queer kids! Queer moms! Queer dads! Trans and nonbinary parents! and much more.
This year’s roundups of books that were (mostly) also published in 2022:
- Holiday Gift Guide: 2 Dozen of 2022’s Best LGBTQ-Inclusive Picture Books: Some of the year’s best, covering a range of identities and themes and emphasizing love, inspiration, and celebration.
- 4 New Drag Queen Picture Books: These queens are serving books! Kid drag queens, dad drag queens, librarian drag queens, and more!
- Queer, Magical, Middle-Grade Books That Deserve Blockbuster Movies: They’d make fantastical, visually stunning, action-packed, queer-inclusive movies—and help counter bias from some authors and studios.
- 4 New, Gorgeously Illustrated, LGBTQ-Inclusive Picture Books: Books that stand out for their art as much as their stories.
- Anne of Green Gables Gets Queer: Three—yes, three!—adaptations this year of the classic story have reimagined it with a very queer Anne.
- Science Gets Queer: Role Models and Resources for LGBTQ and LGBTQ-Parented Youth: Not one but two queer scientists (both parents) won Nobel Prizes this year—and there has also been a recent surge in LGBTQ-inclusive children’s books with STEM themes, which could help future Nobel laureates envision their dreams.
- 2 Delightful New Queer-Inclusive Fairy Tales: See what it means to live queerily ever after!
- 10 New Queer-Inclusive Kids’ Books for Mother’s Day: Or for the holidays!
- 20 Books for Kids and Parents for Trans Awareness Week and Beyond: Board books, picture books, middle grade, and books for grown-ups!
- 12 New Picture Books (and One Early Reader) Celebrating Nonbinary Identities: New ones from 2022!
- 12 NEW Kids’ Books About LGBTQ Pride: Good all year ’round.
- Two New Books on Puberty Are Inclusive and Affirming of All Genders: Great books for tweens.
- 7 Recent LGBTQ-Inclusive Board Books: For the very youngest tots.
Roundups that I posted this year, but which include many books from previous years as well as 2022:
- 11 LGBTQ-Inclusive Holiday Books for Kids: If you’re looking for something seasonal.
- A Baker’s Dozen of LGBTQ-Inclusive Kids’ Books About Baking: A tasty roundup of the many LGBTQ-inclusive kids’ books with baking themes, plus a look at the connections between baking and LGBTQ rights.
- 12 Bedtime Books (and 2 Music Albums) for LGBTQ Families: Sweet dreams!
- 9 Picture Book Biographies for International Lesbian Day and LGBTQ History Month: Or any time of year!
- 14 Books With Queer Dads for Father’s Day: Or for the holidays! Picture books, middle grade, and grown-up titles.
- 12 LGBTQ-Inclusive Kids’ Books for Back-to-School: Including the start of a new semester/quarter in January!
- 14 LGBTQ-Inclusive Titles for Multicultural Children’s Book Day: Or any day! Picture books that are both LGBTQ inclusive and celebrate various cultures around the world.
- Queer Kids with Queer Parents Getting Needed Representation in New Books: It’s a myth that LGBTQ parents “make” our kids LGBTQ, but statistically, some are going to be, so it’s great to see their growing inclusion.
- 7 Cat-Themed, LGBTQ-Inclusive Picture Books for International Cat Day: For the cat lover(s) in your life.
- 30 LGBTQ Kids’ Books About Love for Valentine’s Day: Or anytime you want to celebrate love!
I also encourage you to check out the more than 50 new, LGBTQ-inclusive middle grade titles published in 2022. Many were excellent—so many, in fact, that I’ve found it hard to narrow them down to a manageable roundup. While a few especially resonated with me, I suspect they’ll resonate differently for different folks. Browse them all and read the reviews, or use the tags to filter by what you want.
You can also look at the many LGBTQ family books for grown-ups written this year, including memoirs, parenting guides, and more.
Here’s a link to all the 2022 titles I’ve reviewed for both kids and grown ups (a few stragglers may get added later), so you can also spot any items not covered in the roundups above. And you can always browse the full database for books from previous years, too.
Happy holidays and happy reading!
