Mombian Wins GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Blog

I’m thrilled to say that Mombian has won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Blog for the second time! This one’s for all the queer parents working every day to raise our kids with love and make the world a  better place for them.

Dana Rudolph with GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Blog

The award, given Saturday night at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York City, was a perfect prelude to Mother’s Day, since my son was and remains the inspiration for all I do here. He was eight when I won in 2012; now he’s in college.

GLAAD has always been a voice for our community and its accurate and respectful representation. My deepest thanks to them for valuing my work—offering information and inspiration for queer parents, bringing a queer parent’s lens to politics and current events, and offering reviews of every LGBTQ-inclusive kids’ book for ages 0-12 I can get my hands on (plus books for and about us LGBTQ parents). I’m truly honored to have won again. In this time when LGBTQ families are under increased attack, I take the award as recognition of the continuing importance of our stories. Thank you, GLAAD!

Yes, the work can be tiring, especially as I also serve as my own chief technical officer, marketing director, and social media manager—but I find inspiration every day from all of you readers and from all of the other queer parents and parents-to-be who share your joys and your challenges. I hope this blog helps to uplift the former and offers some support and resources for the latter. Thank you for your readership, comments, questions, and encouragement over the nearly 18 years I have been doing this.

I want to recognize, too, the other nominees for Outstanding Blog, each of whom is also trying to change the world through their words and advocacy:

A special thanks to GLAAD, too, for inviting both my spouse Helen and I to the Media Awards ceremony in New York City, where we had a terrific time and got to enjoy Mothers’ Day in the city the next day. Pop on over to my Instagram feed for some photos of the event.

If Mother’s(s’) Day wasn’t your thing, or if you just want more reasons to celebrate, mark your calendars for the 18th annual LGBTQ Families Day, a time to honor all families that have LGBTQ people in them! Here’s how to take part!
