For Nonbinary Awareness Week, I’m showcasing these board books, picture books, chapter books, and middle grade titles published in 2024 that feature nonbinary kid characters. Stories of friendship, family, self-discovery, adventure, and silliness—they’re great all year ’round!
Most of the books below have characters who are clearly meant to be nonbinary (e.g., they are said to be such or use “they/them” pronouns). A few have characters who aren’t gendered or are still exploring their gender, but seem to be leaning towards nonbinary identities. I’ve chosen to include them here, but interpret them as you will!
You can also filter my Database of LGBTQ Family Books by the Nonbinary/genderqueer kid tag, which will give you books with nonbinary representation from all years. The Pronouns tag may be useful, too.
