Newsgirl

Twelve-year-old Amelia Forrester has just moved to San Francisco with her family—her mother and her mother’s “friend,” Estelle, in 1851. She never knew her father, and is happy to be free of the scorn some back in Boston had directed at her for being born out of wedlock. But San Francisco during the Gold Rush is male-focused and misogynistic, so Amelia decides to dress as a boy and join a group of newsboys. She has a nose for news, however, and escapades follow as she chases headlines. A notable ride in a hot air balloon should particularly delight adventure-seeking readers. Just as important, though, is the representation of two-mom family in a historical context, and Amelia’s growing comfort with her (at the time) unusual family.
