Co-published as a volume of the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Psychotherapy, this 2001 book looks at how parenting has reshaped gay and lesbian identities; the legal and psychological implications of the various ways that gay men and lesbians form families; establishing family roles and tasks; mental health and adjustment among gay and lesbian parents and their children; and more. Much of the book has an academic slant, but the last few chapters include an excerpt (and analysis of) The Velveteen Father, Jesse Green’s 1999 memoir of falling in love with a man who had recently adopted a child, and a series of poems by Debra Weinstein about queer family formation via assisted reproduction.
While some of the book feels slightly dated now, it offers useful snapshots of gay and lesbian families and the challenges and support they found at this moment in time.
