In 2014, a YouTube video by Hillary and Jeff Whittington, chronicling their five-year-old son Ryland’s transition from girl to boy, went viral. In this book they tell even more of their story. After they discovered that Ryland, assigned female at birth, was deaf at age one and needed cochlear implants, the Whittingtons spent nearly four years teaching Ryland to speak. Once that happened, Ryland insisted he was a boy. Hillary Whittington shares her experiences as a mother through this and through Ryland’s transition, showing the obstacles they have encountered as well as the support they have received.
