Ellen DeGeneres and Liz Feldman are producing a new sitcom for NBC about “a lesbian and her straight male best friend who get pregnant just as he meets and marries the love of his life,” reports Deadline Hollywood. Will it be any good?
As Autostraddle commented, “I think that’s three lesbian television tropes already and it doesn’t even have a title yet!” Yes, the theme of pregnant lesbians is an old one, as Sarah Warn wrote about at After Ellen a decade ago — and the theme of lesbians trying to get pregnant is just as tired, as I myself wrote about five years back. I’d much rather watch a show about lesbian moms raising their kids — which is what makes ABC Family’s The Fosters so refreshing.
Feldman wrote for The Ellen DeGeneres Show and 2 Broke Girls, and wrote and starred in This Just Out, a vlog for After Ellen. She will be writing and executive producing the new show, while Jeff Kleeman of Ellen’s A Very Good Production company will share the latter role. With Feldman, a very funny lesbian, in the driver’s seat, and Ellen (whose funny lesbian credentials need no introduction) behind the scenes, the show certainly has possibilities. As long as they avoid tired plotlines about LGBT parents and show us a different angle on our families, I’ll be watching.
