It’s Dr. Seuss’ birthday today! One of the best parts about being a mom is that I can now spout off entire books by Theodore Seuss Geisel at the drop of a hat (with or without cat). John at Blogging Baby (who first brought this day to my attention) says his favorite Seuss book is Horton Hatches the Egg. This is indeed a great book (with a nice message for non-bio moms), albeit a wee bit violent for some tastes. (Hunters with guns threaten Horton at one point.) My faves for the younger set are Dr. Seuss’s ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book! (“Big C, little c, what begins with C? Camel on the ceiling. C, C, C”), Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!, an ode to imagination, and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, an inspired piece of silly randomness that still manages to convey personality to its two child protagonists. (Lesbian mom alert: Two lines in the book instruct the child to “Go ask your dad” and “Go ask your pop,” which we change to “Go ask Granddad” and “Go ask Grandpop” with no alteration of the meter.)
Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss. May you continue to inspire generations to come!
