3738 women in Manila yesterday set a world record for simultaneous breast feeding. Organizers say the event was meant to raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding.
In the U. S., we’re slowly latching on to the idea that it’s acceptable to breastfeed in public. In Oregon recently, a woman was asked to “cover up” when breastfeeding her infant at a Fred Meyer store. After complaining to management and on her blog, the woman has forced the company to apologize and update its policy. In Kansas, a new law protects a woman’s right to breastfeed in public. State health officials and breastfeeding advocates are giving out 40,000 laminated cards to mothers, stating the law and listing phone numbers for reporting violations or getting breastfeeding help.
