It’s the ninth annual HIV Vaccine Awareness Day. Let’s hope there isn’t a need for too many more. The event is intended as a time to thank all the volunteers and professionals working together to find a safe and effective HIV vaccine, and to educate people about the importance of preventive HIV vaccine research.
Organizers request that people wear red AIDS ribbons upside down today to symbolize a “V” for vaccines and the vision of a world without AIDS. They have also compiled a list of local activities.
A few reminders:
- More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since the first cases were reported nearly 25 years ago.
- 14,000 new HIV infections occur in the world every day.
- There is still no cure.
