A new study by the National Cancer Institute and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences says that sleeping with a light on, working a night shift, or not getting enough sleep could be causes of breast cancer. This work confirms several previous studies, providing what researchers say is “the first proof that light is indeed a risk factor for cancer.”
The researchers explain that light at night interferes with the body’s production of melatonin, which impedes the growth of cancers and strengthens the immune system. The Independent has more details and recommendations for improving sleep and lowering risk. (Originally spotted via Newsvine.)
It’s unclear how long nighttime sleeplessness or light would have to continue to be a significant risk. For us moms who are often awake with infants or toddlers, however, this research is sobering. While there are almost as many theories about getting kids to sleep as there are kids, Ask Moxie has an archive of sleep advice that’s a good place to start.
