Many of us in the U. S. will reflect today on the state of our country, and how well it upholds the historical ideals of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Many of us will conclude it comes up short under the current administration. Despite this, I do believe the American system is a fundamentally good one. Not perfect, by any means, but one that at least gives us the hope that we can work to change things for the better.
Tomorrow, the New York Court of Appeals will likely rule on the legality of same-sex marriage in the state. Let’s hope they give us reason to celebrate those historical ideals for a second day in a row.
