Some cheery news to counteract the political gloom this week. Out lesbian Amélie Mauresmo will contend for her first Wimbledon championship tomorrow, against Justine Henin-Hardenne. Mauresmo won their last Grand Slam final matchup, this year’s Australian Open, when Henin-Hardenne withdrew because of stomach illness. I’ll probably root for Mauresmo because she’s a member of our team, so to speak, but mostly I just want to see good tennis from both players. Three sets, long volleys, and some play at the net.
Martina Navratilova, playing in her last Wimbledon, made it to the quarterfinals in women’s doubles, and the third round in mixed doubles.
I’ll leave you with a quote from another lesbian tennis legend that may provide some inspiration in these tough political times:
Champions adjust to the situation. And they keep playing until they get it right.
— Billie Jean King, quoted in Shape Your Self by Martina Navratilova
