No, Amélie Mauresmo is not, to my knowledge, getting married. Her victory at Wimbledon yesterday, however, offers a lesson for those of us feeling dispirited after the same-sex marriage setbacks in New York and Georgia last week.
In the final against Justine Henin-Hardenne, Mauresmo lost the first set, but pulled off the next two to win the championship. ESPN asked her what the most gratifying aspect of her victory was, and she answered:
“Probably the way I turned things around. You’re 6-2 down to Justine in the final of a Grand Slam. You are not in such great position. You feel like, ‘OK, what do I need to do? How am I going to change things around? How am I going to make it go my way?'”
How are we going to make things go our way? What do we need to do?
