Article on Same-Sex Couples and Adoption

Reuters today has a feature titled “U. S. Gay Couples Struggle to Adopt.” There’s probably nothing there that would surprise most readers of this blog, but it’s notable that this is getting mainstream coverage. There are some good quotes from same-sex parents as well as a reminder that only ten states in the U. S. (including the District of Columbia) allow same-sex couples to adopt jointly.

Reuters includes a very anti-LGBT quote from the conservative Massachusetts Family Institute, but quickly rebuts it with information from an article by the American Academy of Pediatrics. One of the AAP authors succinctly puts it: “It isn’t about whether [same-sex] families will continue to exist. It is really about whether these families have all the protections that other families are afforded.”

  1. Good As You read this article a wee bit more closely than I did. They noticed that Reuters, despite a well intentioned article, still used the term “sexual preference,” instead of “sexual orientation.” I’ll admit there are some people who feel that for them, being gay or lesbian was a choice. For the majority of us, however, it’s as inborn and natural as being right or left handed, not a “preference” that can be modified. Reuters wrote an otherwise good article. Let’s hope they take a bit more care with the language next time.
