Martina Navratilova retired in style this past weekend with her 59th career title and induction into the U. S. Open Court of Champions. She and tennis partner Bob Bryan won the mixed-doubles title, making her the oldest U. S. Open champion in that event. (She turns 50 in October.)
Billie Jean King was honored at the start of the tournament by having the U. S. National Tennis Center named after her.
The third out lesbian among the top players, Amelié Mauresmo, lost in the women’s semi-finals to Maria Sharapova, who went on to win the championship.
Now that Grand Slam tennis and WNBA hoops are over for the year, it’s on to college basketball for my regular dose of sporting inspiration. In reality, I tend to prefer small, obscure sports that rarely get televised, but I’ll take what I can get.
