The Indigo Girls new CD, Despite Our Differences, comes out next Tuesday, September 19. You can preorder it now, if you want to get it as fast as humanly possible. Of course, if you’re the type of person to do that, you may prefer the special Collector’s Edition, with bonus live and acoustic tracks.
I’m glad there are more out lesbian musicians now than twenty years ago, as a quick glance at AfterEllen confirms. Still, the canonical Indigo Girls, Melissa Etheridge, and k. d. lang provided the soundtrack for my coming-out years, just as Cris Williamson and Holly Near warmed the hearts of an older generation of lesbians. These days, I’m mostly listening to Putumayo Kids, Music Together, and other kids’ CDs (though thankfully my son also shows a liking for such random items as B. B. King, Bob Marley, and the occasional classical symphony, which he conducts with great vigor). When one of my old faves comes out with a new album, though, I’m glad for the reminder that I shouldn’t abandon my old self in this new adventure called motherhood.
About the only songs my 5 year old son can really identify are by the Indigo Girls. Other than music by Captain Bogg and Salty.
