It’s Martina Navratilova’s 50th birthday today, which makes it a lesbian holiday of sorts. The tennis legend is retiring from competition this year, saying she wants to spend more time at home, promoting her new book, and “devoting more time to her partner, her animals and her fundraising work on behalf of gay and lesbian organizations in the United States (Washington Post).” She may also coach or do TV commentary.
Martina is one of those rare athletes who, after reaching the top of her sport, has continued to compete for the pure love of the game. Her 59th Grand Slam title came in mixed doubles at this year’s U. S. Open, making her the oldest champion in that event. Her 32-year career also included 167 singles titles, more than any man or woman, a record 331 weeks as world number one in singles, and nine Wimbledon singles titles, “the only record that I went after,” she says.
Martina’s been a lesbian icon since before it was fashionable, and has put her money and effort where her fans are. I wish her the best of luck finding family time in retirement, but am also glad she’s going to continue fighting for the LGBT cause.
Happy birthday to a champion and a hero.
