At this hour, the Democrats have regained the House, with Nancy Pelosi becoming the first female Speaker. Out lesbian Representative Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin won reelection, although voters in her home state also approved a ban on same-sex marriage. Openly gay Representative Barney Frank won his race Massachusetts, making him the first openly gay congressional committee chair. Many other lesbian and gay officials have won races at the state and local levels, as reported by the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.
South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, in addition to Wisconsin, approved bans on same-sex marriage, according to CNN projections. Results are still pending in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho and South Dakota.
HRC is also chronicling the election, and Pam’s House Blend looks to be steaming all night. I’ll refrain from staying up late myself documenting the blow-by-blow, and try to save some brain cells for use in the morning.
I will, however, point you to a great piece by Birdie Jaworski at Blogher, in which she uses a story about her bi son to reflect on the assumed polarities of both election day and sexuality, and the reality of life in shades of gray. Worth a read.
