New Mombian Resource Directory

MombianIn celebration of the new year, I’m launching a new and improved version of the Mombian Resource Directory. It’s bigger and easier to use, has its own search feature, and most importantly, now lets you add and rate links. By pooling our knowledge of sites we’ve found useful, we’ll build a better directory than any of us can build alone.

The Directory includes both LGBT-specific sites as well as general, but LGBT-friendly, parenting sites. My focus has been on sites for lesbian moms, since that’s what I know best, but I hope to increase the number of sites for GBT parents as well. Submit links you like, and I’ll create categories for them as needed. I’m also interested in increasing the number of local and international sites, and will likewise create separate categories for various states and countries as links get added.

Link submissions are moderated in order to prevent malicious submission of links that don’t belong here. I’m also retaining final editorial control so I can weed out stale links, duplicate information, and links that are too far afield from LGBT parenting topics.

If you register on the site, you’ll be able to rate the links on a scale of one to five. The system will average everyone’s ratings to determine the overall favorites. You’ll also be able to create a private list of sites that will appear only to you. Finally, if you register, you’ll have the option to sign up for the new Mombian Monthly Newsletter. This is an e-mail newsletter I’ll send towards the end of each month, with highlights from Mombian blog posts as well as some newsletter-only content.

I’ve built the new Directory outside of the WordPress platform. (Much as I love WP for blogging, it has some limitations when managing a large directory like this, e.g., it’s hard to put a single link entry into multiple categories.) This means the interface is a bit different from that of the blog. I’ve tried to maintain much of the look and feel, however, and put links between the two sites.

I hope you enjoy this new extension of the Mombian blog. Please bear with me if I make some additional tweaks over the next week or so, and please contribute your own favorite parenting resources.
