Low-income, same-sex parent families may soon have an easier time finding family-law services geared to their needs. The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) launched its Family Protection Project this week, which aims to “help low-income LGBT parents protect their relationships with their children by increasing and improving the capacity of legal services organizations and by educating families about their rights.”
The Project will offer specialized training and materials to attorneys who provide free and low-cost family-law representation. It also plans to work with community groups “to educate families about their rights and reach out specifically to communities of color with relevant, culturally competent information.” The program will target legal-services programs in selected states, starting with California, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.
