If you’re in the New York area and looking for a weekend activity with your kids later this month, you might consider the free 92nd Street Y LGBT Family Camp Day on Sunday, March 25 from 12 to 3 p.m. You can try a variety of activities or just picnic and mingle. The Y is clearly doing this to generate interest in their longer summer camps—but they’re promoting the camps as “an open welcoming environment for LGBT families,” so that doesn’t seem like such a bad thing. Regardless of your interest in the summer programs, the March event seems like a fun day out.
Spend an afternoon with other LGBT families at the lovely 92nd Street Y Campgrounds located in Pearl River, NY (about 40 minutes north of NYC). 92nd Street Y Camp staff show kids how sap is tapped from maple trees in early spring and turned into maple syrup, and help kids climb the Y’s brand-new 40-foot climbing tower. Kids and parents can also create a piece of copper enamel jewelry in the art studio. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Y’s 100-acre campground. While you’re there, learn about the Y’s summer camps for kids ages 4 to 12, which provide an open, welcoming environment for LGBT families within the Y’s diverse camp community.
For reservations or directions, call Alan Saltz at 212-415-5613; a free bus to the campground leaves from the 92nd Street Y at 11:00 am, and will return to the Y at the end of the program.
