I may be the last person in the country to discover the wonders of a safety can opener, which takes off the top of cans without leaving a sharp rim. It was always a point of pride with me that I used a simple Swing-A-Way opener. The Swing-A-Way was classic. It did the job it was intended to do, with no frills. It wasn’t wasteful and electric. It did, however, create a raw edge on both lid and can that made me check my tetanus-booster records and keep my son away from our recycling bin.
My mother, however, recently got a safety opener, which cuts into the side of the can, at the very top, and somehow manages to leave both can and lid smooth. She then got us one as a gift. I highly recommend it for all families with small children. OXO, whose products I like a lot, has one, as does Zyliss, a few dollars cheaper.
Bonus can-opening points to the first person who can identify this quote (author and book) from children’s literature:
At our house
we open cans.
We have to open
many cans.
And that is why
we have a Zans.
A Zans for cans
is very good.
Have you a Zans for cans?
You should.
I googled Zans and found you and one other blogger. I’ve seen something like those can openers advertised on t.v. and been tempted.
We like to put the tuna cans down for the cats to lick but I’m afraid they’ll get hurt. To say nothing of us.
It must be Dr. Seuss but it’s been years since I read any of the books.
Sounds like Seuss, but we don’t have that book, so I’m stumped. You will tell us, right?
Yup, it’s Seuss, “One Fish, Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish”.
Bliss got it.
