Yes, it really is rocket science.
Our shore excursion today in Port Canaveral was to the Kennedy Space Center. We’re a family of one astronomy major, one engineer and former Air Force officer, and one four-year-old with a penchant for big mechanical things, so it seemed a natural choice. I’ll avoid a minute-by-minute narration of our day, however, to spare those of you who aren’t similarly inclined. Suffice it to say that we managed to keep our son from launching any rockets, and one of the funniest things in the world is to watch a young child try to grab objects out of thin air during an IMAX 3D movie.
Other excursion choices for today included Disney World, Universal Studios, or the beach. We met one dad at breakfast, however, who planned to stay on the ship with his son, enjoying the peace and quiet. This “no obligations” feeling of the cruise is one of its best aspects. With such a diversity of families aboard, there’s really no other way it would work.
And diverse it is. There’s the usual assortment of lesbian moms, gay dads, and their children, created in every conceivable (and adoptable!) manner, LGBT grandparents traveling with children and grandchildren, single parents (with various activities arranged just for them), and various other relatives and friends. It’s a nice mix, and I’ve especially enjoyed talking with the gay dads, who aren’t as prevalent in my social circle back home. It’s also good to speak with those who have older children, though the children themselves are mostly off doing their own thing. It gives me a little foretaste of what I can look forward to.
Tomorrow is Key West. More on this gay mecca in my next post.
Sounds like you’re having a great time–I must admit that I’m a bit jealous! Glad to hear your adventure is going well and good luck with the blogging workshop. :-)
