Happiest Gay Couple: Episode IV

Rick and Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the WorldLast week’s Happiest Gay Couple episode was mostly unmitigated silliness. Rick and Steve’s cat Pussy somehow decided the fetus growing inside Dana was really a mouse, and enlisted all the neighborhood cats to stalk her. It’s amusing for those of us who have ever puzzled the mysteries of feline behavior, but misses that “I’m laughing because I’ve been there” humor that gives the show its best moments.

The episode delivers, however, when moms-to-be Dana and Kirsten are ranking the desired gender and sexual orientation of their future offspring. Their first hope is that their child is a lesbian, then a straight woman, then a gay man, and finally a straight man. When Rick points out “Think about it. If we have a straight girl, some day, she’s gonna want to sleep with straight guys. How would you feel about straight men banging your daughter?” Dana quickly adjusts: “Point taken. Straight girl moves to the bottom of the list.”

The scene plays off the fallacious (or is that phallacious?) right-wing assumption that all LGBT parents want LGBT children (and have some control in the matter), but also hits the very real concern of many parents about how they will relate to their child based on gender and orientation. Even though I didn’t (and still don’t) have a preference, I did ponder what would be different with the possible permutations.

Anyone else? What’s easy or hard for you with girly girls, macho boys, junior drag queens, tomboys, or anything betwixt and between?
