A lesbian mom in Texas is in a custody battle with her ex-partner’s uncle, the former couple’s known sperm donor. Tamila Payne says she tried to accommodate the donor’s wishes and let her son spend every other week with him, but the boy’s growing reluctance made her stop. Now the donor is suing for custody and Payne could end up spending only one weekend a month with her son. Her ex-partner, who had two older boys by a previous marriage, is barring Payne from seeing them as well, although Payne says she “was like a mother” to them during the women’s seven-year relationship.
I wish them a speedy resolution in the best interests of their child. The case does, however, underline the importance of getting our legal ducks in a row before embarking on parenthood. Here are a few resources:
