For most of us in colder climes, camping season is drawing to a close. If you’re lucky enough to live near or be visiting Los Angeles, however, you have the opportunity not only to eat freshly roasted marshmallows in November, but to do so in the company of other LGBT families. The L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center asked that I pass along this information about their upcoming Rainbow Family Camp:
Ah, camp. The hikes in the forest. The spur-of-the-moment games of hide-and-go-seek and basketball. Arts and crafts. Sipping hot cocoa in front of a roaring fire.
Gay and lesbian parents will have a unique opportunity to revisit all those fond memories—and build new ones with their kids—at Rainbow Family Camp, a three-day gathering for LGBT-parented families.
Held November 16-18 at Camp de Benneville Pines in the San Bernardino Mountains, the camp, coordinated by the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Family Services Program, will offer a wide variety of family activities, including hiking, arts and crafts, a talent show, movies, outdoor sports and activities, indoor games and community meals. Parents also will be able to attend adult-only socials.
“Rainbow Family Camp is a special opportunity for families with kids of all ages to enjoy a fun-filled camping experience and to build bonds with other LGBT-parented families,” says Arielle Rosen, Family Services manager. “Both parents and kids are guaranteed to have a fantastic time!”
Camp fees are $117 per adult, $82 for teens ages 13-19, $42 for kids ages 3-12 and free for children age 2 and under. Fees include meals, lodging and all programs. Accommodations are family-style, with three to nine private rooms per cabin and shared bathrooms. Some upgrades are available for $40 per adult, which includes lodging in a cabin with living rooms and kitchens, some of which also have double beds.
