The Family Pride Coalition has today changed its name to the Family Equality Council (FEC) and launched a new Web site. Many of us are familiar with Family Pride from their work coordinating Family Week in Provincetown and organizing LGBT families to attend the White House Egg Roll. David Jacques, eCommunications Coordinator for FEC, below gives us a guest post about all the changes and what you can find on the new site.
I like to think of organizations as living, breathing creatures.
Family Pride was born nearly 30 years ago as an organization for gay fathers and their children. It was a starting point from which the organization grew to include lesbian moms in 1986, and then transgender and bisexual parents in 1998. Over the years we have increased the visibility of LGBTQ-parented families, defeated scores of anti-family legislation and have made schools safer for our children. It has been a busy and productive thirty years to say the least.
Today, Family Pride is taking another big step in the organization’s growth.
I’m thrilled to announce that Family Pride is changing its name to the Family Equality Council. Our new name and expanded vision more accurately reflect our purpose: securing family equality for all loving families.
If there is anything we’ve learned through the years, it is this: together, we are exponentially more powerful. When we work across communities and join forces with other progressive groups and movements, we are truly unstoppable. Our new name and expanded vision reflect this fundamental understanding.
Coinciding with our name change is the launch of our new website. In many ways, this website is the collective child of our membership. Some nine months ago (a coincidence?), we asked our members what they wanted in a new website. Ideas flooded in and the website began to grow. Today, like a proud parent, we are thrilled with the result. Some of the highlights include:
- Searchable database of accredited LGBTQ family research
- Photo gallery of LGBTQA parents
- Ask the experts your toughest questions
- Blog with stories, information and news about our families
It is a new and exciting chapter in the life of our organization. If you are new to the Family Equality Council, welcome aboard. If you already are a member, thank you for supporting us along the way. It is your support that ultimately allows us to do the work we do and achieve the equality we know our families deserve.
Because this movement is your movement, I invite you to send any feedback, questions or comments that you might have. Together, we are changing the world.
