The Lambda Literary Foundation has announced nominees for the 20th Annual Lambda Literary Awards. I’ve reviewed a few of them on Mombian; here they are again, with links to the reviews:
- The Brides of March, Beren de Motier (iUniverse): A funny, touching memoir of the brief period of legal same-sex marriage in Multnomah County, Oregon.
- Courting Equality, Patricia Gozemba & Karen Kahn (Beacon Press): A beautiful book of photos and text celebrating the fight for marriage equality in Massachusetts.
- Tips on Having a Gay (Ex) Boyfriend, Carrie Jones (Flux-Llewellyn Worldwide): A young adult book that explores the broader ramifications of homophobia and closetedness without resorting to stereotypes.
- Waiting for the Call, Jaqueline Taylor (University of Michigan Press): An insightful, compassionate memoir about coming out, motherhood, and faith, woven into a narrative that reveals the many layers of what we mean by “family.”
- All of the below three in my holiday gift guide:
Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List, Rachel Cohn & David Levithan (Random House Children’s Books): A young adult book that explores the friendship between gay Ely (who is also the son of lesbian moms) and straight Naomi. Funny, hip, and full of pop culture references.
Saints of Augustine, P.E. Ryan (HarperTeen): Another one for young adults, this time a slightly darker tale of the friendship between gay Sam (who has two dads) and straight Charlie. A sensitive but honest look at friendship.
What if Someone I Know is Gay?, Eric Marcus (Simon Pulse): A revision of the 2000 edition, this is an invaluable resource for straight teens with gay classmates, teens who may be questioning their own sexuality, and teens dealing with a parent’s coming out. Even children raised from birth in lesbian or gay families may find it addresses questions that teen awkwardness prevents them from asking their parents.
There are also plenty I haven’t reviewed, so do check out the list for yourselves.
Thanks for mentioning that our book, “Courting Equality” (Beacon Press, 2007), hit the nomination list for the Lambda Literary Awards. We’re thrilled. Hope that your readers will explore your review of our book that is also posted at http://www.courtingequality.com.
Congrats to you on having The Advocate (Dec. 18, 2007) recognize the great work that you do on Mombian. I really appreciate the fine work that you are putting out.
Thanks, Pat! And thanks for all the work you’re doing, too–for LGBT people everywhere, but especially here in Massachusetts.
