What Do You Represent?

I love today’s XKCD comic:

How It Works

Two thoughts come to mind here, other than the obvious feminist point the author is making:

  • How this attitude is reflected in some people’s reactions to both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama (substitute “women” or “blacks” for “girls”);
  • How this attitude also applies to LGBT parents and our children, who often feel pressure not to reflect badly on LGBT parents as a whole. (See Abigail Garner’s Families Like Mine for thoughts on this from adult children of LGBT parents.)

Filmmakers Hanifah Walidah and Olive Demetrius have used this quick-to-categorize way of thinking as the basis for their documentary U People, and their weekly video blog of the same name at After Ellen. Not parenting focused, but highly recommended.
