I’m honored to announce that Mombian has been selected as a finalist for “Best Large Blog” in the 2008 Weblog Awards.
Voting is now open! I’d very much appreciate your votes.
You can vote once every 24 hours in each blog category through Tuesday January 13, 2009 at 10:00 p.m. GMT (5:00 p.m. EST and 2:00 p.m. PST), so please take a few seconds each day to cast your votes and perhaps find some new and interesting blogs along the way.
Last year Mombian was a finalist for “Best LGBT Blog.” I’m flattered no matter where they want to put me, and appreciate the spirit of trying to include more blogs, rather than including the same one(s) in multiple categories. It also happens that The Bilerico Project, for whom I’m writing now as well, is a finalist for “Best LGBT Blog.” I’m actually glad to be elsewhere so I don’t have to compete against myself and my colleagues there.
I have to say, though, when I look at blogs like Daily Kos, I don’t feel that Mombian is really a “Large Blog.” It seems, however, that blogs are rated much like olives; after “large” comes “jumbo” and “colossal” (or in the case of the Weblog Awards, “Very Large” and “Major” blogs). My other worthy competitors for “Best Large Blog” (however one defines it) are:
- Sister Toldjah
- DeSmogBlog
- Miss Cellania
- JammieWearingFool
- Bloggasm
- skippy the bush kangaroo
- The Agonist
- Fafblog
- Fausta’s Blog
The full slate of Best LGBT Blog finalists is:
- JoeMyGod
- Towleroad
- The Bilerico Project
- Pam’s House Blend
- Susie Bright’s Journal
- Tammy Bruce
- This Girl Called Automatic Win
- TransGriot
- Gay Patriot
- Blabbeando
And just to round out the other categories I follow most closely, here are the Best Parenting Blog finalists:
- Looky, Daddy!
- Blissfully Domestic
- The Bingham Diaries
- Vs Two Point Oh: Mrs. Flinger
- 4tunate
- Life on the Reflux Rollercoaster
- Amalah
- Notes from the Trenches
- Things Good Parents Do
- “I think this world is perfect…”
(For those of you wondering about the conspicuous absence of über-parenting-blog Dooce, it’s up under “Best Diarist.”)
Here is the full slate of categories, with links to the voting polls. Vote early, vote often (as much as the rules allow), and most of all, get to know some new blogs and bloggers.
You’re diplomatic, but I don’t have to be: several other “Large” blogs are fairly onerous (i.e., snark- and cant-filled) right wing “news analysis” blogs. People can view the other nominees and decide for themselves, but clearly Mombian will be getting my vote, early and often (okay, once per day; whatever).
The LGBT Blogs category is full of wonderful sources of news, analysis, entertainment, and intrigue. I’ll withhold a plug but may be tempted to vote for several different blogs, rotating through the choices over the days.
But I WILL say that Looky, Daddy! is a major queer ally. Major. He has written many moving posts about gay marriage, and worked to try to raise money for the Prop 8 fight with an inventive shared post. So I urge Mombian readers to (a) check him out, and then (b) vote for him early and often. His is the parenting blog I’d love to see get the visibility from the win. (Parenting blogs vote here.)
Good luck!
Thanks for your vote(s), Polly, and for the information about Looky, Daddy! Good to know.
Thanks, Polly, for the endorsement, although my wife would argue the only thing I am a “major” of is a pain in the arse.
