Helen and I take a retrospective look at a TV classic from our childhoods, Schoolhouse Rock!. We then answer a viewer’s question about how to handle racist and homophobic family members and how to talk about them with one’s children. On a lighter note, we tell you which of our ideas for a post-L Word lesbian TV series is shared by Jennifer Beals, and we promise to vlog about the upcoming L Word season with a parent’s eye.

I loved Schoolhouse Rock! And now I’ve got that bill song going through my head. I like how you handled that question from your reader.
Schoolhouse Rock does indeed rock. It was indeed on commercial TV (ABC) and was actually the product of an advertising agency (I think it was McCaffrey and McCall) working for the network. It began when one of the admen noticed that his son knew all of the lyrics to popular songs but couldn’t remember his times tables.
One of the coolest things about the series is the amazing level of talent that helped to create it including performers like Jack Sheldon (who was one of the fill-in band leaders on Johnny Carson’s Tonight show) and Bob Dorough (a truly great blues/jazz performer in his own right) and writers like Lynn Aherns (who went on to write lyrics for Broadway musicals like Ragtime, Suessical, Dessa Rose and Once on this Island). Just an amazing production in so many ways.
