Former Arkansas governor and erstwhile Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee shared his opinion about same-sex parents in a speech last week at The College of New Jersey. As reported by The Perspective:
He also affirmed support for a law in Arkansas that prohibits same-sex couples from becoming adoptive or foster parents. “I think this is not about trying to create statements for people who want to change the basic fundamental definitions of family,” Huckabee said. “And always we should act in the best interest of the children, not in the seeming interest of the adults.”
“Children are not puppies,” he continued. “This is not a time to see if we can experiment and find out, how does this work?
Leave a comment. Consider it a form of Monday morning catharsis.
Well, he’s absolutely right. Let’s not create statements to redefine family. Because if it becomes something based strictly on married couples who have procreative sex to produce their kids, then he’s going to have to start disqualifying families that have been recognized for millenia — like Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
And yes, we should be acting in the best interests of the children who need families, and not in the seeming interest of adults who want to promote homophobia.
And he’s also absolutely right that children aren’t puppies. (Though personally I think there’s a lot of truth to the idea that living with a toddler is like living with a dog, while living with a teenager is like living with a cat.)
And finally, he’s also absolutely right that this is not a time to experiment and find out how it works to have kids raised by gay parents. That time was a few decades ago, when the gayby boom first began. By now, we’ve got ample studies to show that the experiment was a success, and gay and lesbian parents can do just as good a job raising children as straight ones do.

Huckabee endorsed a bill that would make it illegal to perform an abortion that was because of an interracial rape? (SB 529 as passed by the Ga Senate that he endorsed). I am a pro-life physician but I do not understand this bill. It discriminates against the victims of interracial rape.
