It’s Raining Lesbian Moms

Well, not quite raining. But seeing two of us on screen at one time (aside from fictional couples) is still something of an event. Barely a week after CBS’s The Talk had actor and gay dad Neil Patrick Harris as a guest, they had chef and lesbian mom Cat Cora on as well, talking with actor and lesbian mom Sara Gilbert and the other co-hosts about the ups—and downs—of a two-woman relationship, being pregnant at the same time as one’s partner, and “who’s gonna be the butch.”

My initial thought was that Gilbert seemed a little reserved throughout the exchange. I would have liked to see her chime in more about her own experience. My second thought was that it was probably just as good (if not better, given the mainstream audience) for straight co-hosts Leah Remini and Sharon Osbourne to have the exchange with Cora, showing that it’s possible both to be accepting and to acknowledge differences.

Thanks to After Ellen for the tip; visit their site for another clip from the show, where Cora makes her Barbados Sweet Potatoes.

  1. Thanks! And I agree about happy families–although I also think it’s important for us not to try to be “perfect” families. That puts unnecessary pressure on both us and our kids.
