Wanda Sykes Gives $15K to LGBTQ Youth Center

Comedian and lesbian mom Wanda Sykes surprised her audience last Thursday by announcing a $15,000 donation to the Ruth Ellis Center in Detroit. The Center provides short- and long-term residential safe space and support services for runaway, homeless, and at-risk LGBTQ youth.

Sykes had been speaking at a fundraising event for the Center, and immediately matched a $15,000 grant from PNC Bank, reports MLive, which has the full story.

Sykes also filmed a public service announcement for the Center in August, embedded below for your viewing pleasure. It’s not a funny bit, as are so many of  Sykes’ pieces—but it’s nice to know she takes the problems of LGBTQ youth seriously.
