France Seeks Gender-Neutral Parental Language

The French government is seeking to change all references to “mothers and fathers” in its civil code to the more neutral “parents,” as part of a new law that would also give equal adoption and marriage rights to same- and opposite-sex couples.

Britain’s Telegraph has the details. It notes that French President Francois Hollande will present the draft bill to his cabinet for approval on October 31.

In less happy news, it looks like marriage equality in Australia is out of the question until at least next year’s federal elections, with both houses rejecting proposed bills last week. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott “talked down” the bills, reports The Australian. Abbott has a lesbian sister, however, and says he is “a bit conflicted” on the issue, the paper adds.

Indeed.
