Gun control is only one part of what our country must do to reduce the chances of another school shooting like the one December 14 in Newtown, Connecticut—but it is a vital one. There are a number of petitions out now to let our elected officials know our thoughts on the matter. I’m highlighting a petition and a pledge from Moms Rising because they’re good folks who do a lot across the board to help those of us who have the honor of being called moms.
Here’s their open letter to the National Rifle Association (NRA) and Congress “urging them to stop blocking common sense gun regulations that protect all of our families.” I hope you’ll consider adding your name to it.
And here’s their pledge asking moms and leaders to push for the following reforms:
- Criminal background checks for all gun purchases, including at gun shows and on the Internet.
- A ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
- A federal gun trafficking statute with real penalties to crack down on criminals who illegally traffic guns onto our streets and south of the border to Mexico.
Wishing you and your children a safe holiday season and New Year.
