Marriage equality isn’t the only area where moms have been in the news this week pushing for LGBT equality. Two Ohio mothers with LGBT children are leading a campaign asking parents and relatives of LGBT people to encourage their senators to support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).
Lyn Herron and Gail Burkholder told their personal stories at a press conference yesterday at their own Senator Rob Portman’s office. Herron’s son is gay and was discriminated against at work; Burkholder’s is bisexual and transgender, and she wants to prevent discrimination from happening to him, reports HuffPo.
Portman himself has a gay son and supports marriage equality, but has not yet declared his position on ENDA.
Herron and Burkholder are now headlining a campaign in conjunction with GetEQUAL, asking other members of “equality families” to sign up and help locally in their states. They explained in an e-mail to GetEQUAL supporters:
Are you LGBT and think your parent(s) would share their support for workplace fairness? Are you the parent of an LGBT child and want to stand up for their right to hold a job without being harassed or fired? Do you have friends who are parents of LGBT kids who might be willing to share their story? Join us in sharing your story about the dreams you have for your children.
On Wednesday, ENDA passed a Senate committee and now heads to the floor. It’s great to see moms helping sustain the momentum.
