Before I was even done with it, I knew “Power of Two” by Amanda McGee was going to be my Post of the Week. She tells the lovely, poignant story of her in-laws, two women, finally deciding to marry and be open about their relationship. Their grandchildren’s response is delightful.
Amanda writes at her blog The Wink of her husband Sean, his mom Jan, and her spouse Jeannie, when Jan decided to put into words what they had all known for years:
The years that Sean and Jan had between them, the years that Jeannie had been waiting in the wings, the decades Jan had with parents from a generation that never had the tools to absorb this sort of thing, they all collided in the space in front of us.
Give yourself a treat, and go read it in full. Have tissues handy, but know they will be for tears of joy. Many thanks to Amanda for sharing this story, and to Erin Margolin of The Gay Dad Project for bringing it to my attention.
Thank you so much for this. The post was intimidating to write. I am humbled by the welcoming response. I thought I was going to be the one who introduced trolls to my mother in law.
Thank YOU for your courage in writing it. I’m sure many other families will find strength in your words.
Thank you for this, Dana. I know Amanda appreciates your kindness and support (and her husband, too!). Thanks for helping us spread more stories and sharing about all kinds of families!
